Construction of the 17 km Sagarejo – Badiauri Highway Progresses

8 May 2025

The construction of the 17 km Sagarejo – Badiauri Highway, a key segment of the Kakheti Highway, is advancing steadily. The project includes a four-lane highway featuring a new transport hub in Badiauri Village, along with four bridges, eight overbridges, and 86 culverts. Additionally, plans are in place to improve the local road network and connect it to the new highway.

Currently, roadbed and surfacing installation is underway, and artificial structures are being built.

Minister of Infrastructure Revaz Sokhadze, together with Kakheti Governor Giorgi Aladashvili and Sagarejo Mayor Avtandil Gulikashvili, recently visited the construction site to assess progress.

The new highway section will bypass five densely populated villages—Tokhliauri, Manavi, Chailuri, Kakabeti, and Badiauri—significantly reducing traffic congestion in residential areas. The project aims to enhance road safety, lessen environmental impact, and improve travel efficiency. The distance will be reduced by 2 km, travel time will be nearly halved, and road conductivity will triple.

A modern commercial yard near the Badiauri hub will provide a safe space for local entrepreneurs and farmers, boosting small business sales in the region. The highway will fully comply with modern road safety standards and include a lighting system.

Funded by a World Bank loan and co-financed by the state budget, the project is valued at GEL 276.7 million. According to agreements, construction is scheduled for completion by the end of 2025.

The first 35 km section of the Kakheti Highway, from Tbilisi to Sagarejo, was opened last year. Once the ongoing works are completed, one of the busiest 52 km highway segments will fully replace old road infrastructure, greatly improving travel quality.

In total, an 85 km four-lane international highway is planned for development, stretching to Bakurtsikhe. Upon completion, travel from Tbilisi to Telavi will take just one hour and 20 minutes.
