Revaz Sokhadze - We Will Ensure Velistsikhe’s Urban Development is Completed Promptly and with High Quality

19 May 2025

“A significant urban renewal project is underway in Velistsikhe, valued at GEL 30 million. Unfortunately, delays have occurred as the contractor failed to meet its obligations. We will soon make a decision on the necessary steps to complete the project efficiently and to the highest standards. Additionally, efforts to resolve water supply issues—causing discomfort for residents—are in progress. I sincerely apologize to the local population for the inconvenience. Once these projects are completed, Velistsikhe will emerge as another vibrant tourist destination in Georgia,” stated Revaz Sokhadze, Minister of Infrastructure, following his visit to the ongoing works in Velistsikhe.

The Municipal Development Fund of the Ministry of Infrastructure is leading the urban renewal project in Velistsikhe, Kakheti Region. The project includes the rehabilitation of several houses in Velistsikhe’s center, as well as improvements to the square in front of the Velistsikhe Theater, the central street, and the adjacent park. Additionally, new roads, drainage systems, and a water treatment plant will be constructed.

Minister Sokhadze, alongside David Songhulashvili, Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture; Giorgi Aladashvili, Governor of Kakheti; and representatives of the local government, toured the ongoing urban renewal works.

As part of the project, the façade and ground floor of the Velistsikhe Theater, named after Vaso Godziashvili, will undergo restoration. The theater, which has a history spanning 130 years, staged its first performance in 1885. Velistsikhe itself is one of Kakheti’s oldest and largest settlements, distinguished by its remarkable architecture and historical buildings.

The project is being carried out with financial support from the Asian Development Bank (ADB). Through the rehabilitation of Velistsikhe, Kakheti will gain yet another captivating tourist center rich in historical and architectural value, creating new economic opportunities for the local community.
