Construction on the second section of the Zemo Osiauri – Chumateleti Highway (Surami Bypass) is in its final stages. This vital segment of the East-West Highway is being developed by the Roads Department of the Ministry of Infrastructure.
Recently, Minister of Infrastructure Mr. Revaz Sokhadze, along with his deputies and local government representatives, visited the construction site.
The new highway section features a four-lane, 6.4 km road, along with 11 bridges and five tunnels, all of which are now complete. Currently, electrical and mechanical systems—lighting and ventilation—are being installed in the tunnels, while road surfacing is in progress on both bridges and tunnels. Additionally, construction of management buildings has commenced.
This section extends the 13 km Khashuri Bypass, allowing traffic to bypass Surami and Chumateleti, seamlessly connecting to the first tunnel of the Rikoti Pass. Built to international road safety standards, the new highway will feature a modern road lighting system.
The Surami Bypass is expected to significantly reduce transit congestion, improve travel time, and enhance road safety for commuters.
Funded by a World Bank loan and state budget contributions, the project is valued at GEL 265 million.
The Zemo Osiauri – Chumateleti section of the highway is set to open this year.
